What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

December 12, 2025

The world of mental health treatment can feel like learning a new language. You’ll hear about inpatient, outpatient, IOP, residential care, and other types of treatment programs. But for many people, there is a “sweet spot” in treatment that offers intensive care without requiring you to live within a treatment facility. This is called a partial hospitalization program.

If you or a loved one needs more than a weekly therapy session but doesn’t require 24/7 monitoring, a PHP might be the perfect fit. Reach out to us at Time Wellness in Georgia for a confidential assessment.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

In simple terms, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured mental health treatment program that runs for several hours a day. In most cases 5 to 7 days a week.

To get a full understanding of how PHP works, let’s paint a picture.

Think of PHP as your full time job where your work is your recovery. You attend the center during the day participating in group therapy, individual counseling, and skull building, then you go home in the evening. This model is very effective because it closes the gaps between inpatient care (where you stay overnight) and standard outpatient care (where you visit once a week).

It also offers high level medical support and at the same time allowing you to maintain a connection to your family and daily life.

Who is PHP for?

It’s important to note that PHP isn’t for everyone. It is designed for specific stages of recovery.

This program is ideal for:

  • Stepping Down: Individuals leaving a residential or inpatient facility who aren’t quite ready to face the world without structure.
  • Stepping Up: People currently in therapy who are seeing their symptoms worsen and need more aggressive intervention to avoid psychiatric hospitalization.

What Does a Typical Day in PHP Look Like?

One reason people are hesitant to join a program is due to fear of the unknown.

A typical day look like this:

  • Morning Check-In: A review of your mood, sleep, and goals for the day.
  • Group Therapy: This is the core of PHP. Here you process emotions and learn from peers who understand your struggle.
  • Psychoeducation: These are classes that teach you the science behind your mental health and practical coping skills like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).
  • Lunch and Breaks: This provides time to eat, refresh, and practice social skills in a structured way.
  • Individual Therapy: This is one-on-one time spent with a mental health professional to help you understand your mental health symptoms and develop healthy coping strategies.

How to Choose the Best PHP Program for You

A big step is deciding to enter treatment. But you need to find the right facility and that process can be overwhelming. Not all programs are created equal and the quality of care you receive will directly impact your long-term recovery.

We’ve put together a checklist of what to look out for to ensure you choose a safe reputable program:

  • Accreditation and Licensing: First and foremost, check if the facility is accredited by major health organizations like the Joint Commission or CARF. This ensures they meet strict safety and quality standards.
  • Evidence-Based Therapies: They should use proven clinical methods. Ask if they offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or trauma-informed care.
  • Staff Qualifications: Who will be treating you? Look for a multidisciplinary team that includes licensed psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and masters-level therapists. You want a team that communicates with each other about your progress.
  • Customized Treatment Plans: Avoid cookie cutter programs that treat everyone the same. The best programs will assess your unique history and create a plan tailored to your specific triggers and goals.
  • Aftercare Planning: Recovery doesn’t end when the program finishes. A quality PHP will start planning your discharge on day one, ensuring you have a support system, alumni groups, or a step-down plan, like an intensive outpatient program (IOP), ready when you leave.
  • Insurance Transparency: Treatment is an investment, but it shouldn’t be a financial mystery. Look for a center that is transparent about costs and willing to verify your insurance benefits upfront so there are no surprise bills later.
